After finishing his military service in the Russian army, the young Asa returns home, in the Kazakhstan Steppes, to the house where his sister lives with her husband and their children, where they herd sheep, the only possible job in this place. Asa wants to set himself up, buy his own sheep and create a family but he’s missing something: a wife. So he decides to propose to the only young single woman around, the rotund Tulpan, daughter of some neighbours.
