LOS NIÑOS DEL BARRIO ROJO
(Born into Brothels, 2004)

The most stigmatised people in Calcutta’s red light district are not the prostitutes, but their children. These children are surrounded by poverty, abuse and despair, with few possibilities of escaping from their mothers' fate or of aspiring to a life other than the one they have. One day, Zana Briski, a professional photographer, decided to teach photography and give cameras to the children living in the red light district, one of the most squalid and apparently grimmest places in the world. Her idea was to awaken the artistic flair that was hidden inside many of them. The resulting photographs taken by these youngsters are not just an example of their talent and their gift for observation; they reflect something a lot greater: that art is an incredibly liberating and uplifting force.
