REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES (2002)
Adapted from the play written by Josefina López based on her own experiences, this is the story of Ana, the young Latin-American daughter of Mexican emigrants living in East Los Angeles who struggles to keep a balance between her personal ambitions and her cultural heritage while trying to make a place for herself in life. On the verge of leaving high school, she has met a boy who likes her the way she is. Ana is the first person in the family able to even dream of going to university, but her modest education and loyalty towards her family keep her from doing so.
Although her extremely traditional mother, Carmen, has good intentions, she underestimates Ana’s character and her yearning for a different life.
She has placed all of her hopes in Ana to give her the grandchildren she so desires.
