EL TREN DE LA MEMORIA

EL TREN DE LA MEMORIA (2004)

In the sixties, dire financial circumstances drove two million Spaniards to leave the country. Their destinations were Northern European countries like Germany, Switzerland or the Netherlands. Half of them were illegal and travelled without work permits. Eighty percent of them could neither read nor write. Many of them went with the intention of working for a few months and stayed there for thirty years. Josefina was one of them. At the age of eighteen, with virtually no education and driven by need, she left her village for the first time and got onto one of the special trains for emigrants without knowing what she would find at her destination, Nuremberg, in a country that had nothing in common with her own. She and her travelling companions, brought up in the countryside, were taken in only 48 hours to a working class, industrial world. But they arrived by the back door.
