BAMAKO (2006)
Melé is a bar singer, her husband Chaka is out of work and the couple is on the verge of breaking up. In the courtyard they share with other families, a somewhat unusual trial is underway: the defendants are the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund and the accusation that they are responsible for most of Africa’s woes. Different representatives of African society take the stand to explain their points of view while the lives of the characters in the film continue during the breaks in the makeshift trial. Chaka, for example, doesn’t seem to be particularly interested in what’s going on in the courtyard.
