DANCE:
ARGIRA
VERDINI DANTZA TALDEA
At the 5th Human Rights Film Festival, the Verdini Dantza Taldea company will present its latest work, Argira (“Towards the Light”), the sixth show by this veteran ensemble from San Sebastian dedicated to dancing with the handicapped. Argira takes up the baton from its predecessor, Ilunpetik (“From the Darkness”).
Argira portrays the dream of a modern, contemporary society in which the handicapped are permitted to develop fully and freely. In this performance, the choreographer Isabel Verdini bases her story on the tale of an old man who catches a sparrow, worried that the city is full of dangers it won’t be able to survive. Taking the bird home to look after and protect it, he puts it gently in a cage, away from all outside danger, feeding it and lovingly taking care of it… until one day, on approaching the cage, he discovers that the bird has died.
Based on this metaphor, Isabel Verdini wishes to express her concern: “I love him, take care of him, protect and enjoy him, I cry, laugh, vibrate and suffer with and for him, but… do I accompany and help him to fulfil himself as a free person? Do I allow him to unfold and put his freedom into practice?”Directors: Isabel Verdini, Agurtzane Verdini
