Los caminos de la memoria

RESCUING THE VICTIMS OF FRANCO’S REGIME FROM OBLIVION

Oasis

Franco’s dictatorship was one of the longest and most violent dictatorial regimes of the 20th century. By approving the controversial Historical Memory Law in December 2007, the Spanish Government seeks to lift the veil enshrouding the subject since 1975 and finally do justice to the hundreds of thousands who fell under Franco’s power.

Los caminos de la memoria centres its plot on the exhumation of one of the many mass graves dotted over Spain. Here, the volunteers painstakingly uncover the bones of a group of assassinated people. Their composition looks not unlike a relief on the horror. The osseous remains depict a sequence on hold for over seventy years. The clock of those events starts ticking again as the memory is reconstructed. The descendents of the victims talk, breaking the curse of silence with their words.
