Number 911 of the Avenida Prestes Maia, one of the major arteries running through the heart of São Paulo, is an enormous building consisting of two blocks occupied by the MSTC (Movimento Sem Teto do Centro). Two ash-coloured buildings, previously considered to be the most modern in Latin America, with over 360 windows, and in which over 460 families have been living since 3 November 2002. Following a string of negotiations with the authorities, Prestes Maia No. 911 was finally evacuated in 2007. In these photographs, the Brazilian photographer Julio Bittencourt (1980) portrays some of the inhabitants of this building during its almost five years of occupation.
