HISTORICAL MEMORY

The current concept of Historical Memory refers to the general effort made by institutes, associations, and citizens to recover and remember facts that, many times, are from many decades ago. In many cases they have been manipulated and/or distorted by those in charge of “writing” history at each moment: the victors. Or they have simply wanted to forget and “turn the page”. Nevertheless, the future cannot be built by forgetting the past.

In Spain, the argued and sometimes criticised Historical Memory Law proclaims its intention to recover this recent past. In Latin America, specifically in the Southern Cone like Uruguay, Chile and Argentina, which where victims of dictatorships, efforts are made so that those historical periods that are full of suffering remain in the collective memory.
