RELIGION AND RIGHT TO SEXUAL ORIENTATION

Persecution for reasons of sexual orientation, often under the auspices of the law, has experienced a gradual reduction worldwide. Today, although the Church considers homosexuality to be “immoral” and “against nature”, European countries no longer penalize homosexual relations between consenting adults.

However, in a large part of the Islamic world, the indulging in this activity by two people of the same sex is considered to be “vile” and “perverse”, and is punished with sentences ranging from a hundred lashes to the death penalty.

Despite the enormous progress achieved in only a few years, the right to sexual orientation is very often still not respected due to the strict, unbending interpretation of certain religious principles. Often this intolerance and persecution goes hand in hand with social rejection.
