DISABILITY: AUTISM
Autistic spectrum disorders are the result of malfunctions in neurological development (of the central nervous system). People affected with “classic autism” demonstrate several clinical features: limited reciprocal social interaction, disability with respect to both verbal and non- verbal communication, and a limited repertoire of interests and behaviours.
Five out of every 10,000 people in the world suffer from “classic autism”. It is thought, however, that different aspects of the syndrome affect approximately 1 in every 700 or 1,000 individuals. Although this ratio is maintained throughout the different social classes, when it comes to gender, males are more at risk: 4 out of every 5 sufferers of autistic disorders are men.
While autism has no cure, the lives of affected people improve remarkably on combining the appropriate educational approach with the backing of families and professionals.
