ALI: FEAR EATS THE SOUL (Angst essen Seele auf, 1957)

In a café frequented by immigrant workers, Emmi, a 60 year-old woman, meets Ali, a Moroccan worker half her age. The next day he moves into her house. The announcement of their marriage is met with indignation and incomprehension: their children, the neighbours, their workmates… none of them can understand the relationship and do their best to put an end to it. One of Fassbinder’s most famous movies, in which he pays tribute to the king of American melodrama, Douglas Sirk, with a story taking its inspiration from All That Heaven Allows (1955).
